Ultra-violet light rays (UV rays) are emitted by the sun; our eyes are just as vulnerable to UV rays as our skin. To protect our skin from developing sun related skin conditions we must apply sunscreens, but how can we protect our eyes from sun related eye conditions?

Firstly, you must never gaze directly into the sun as you will risk burning the anterior surface of your eye or in more extreme cases the back of your eye where the damage is irreversible.

Moreover, an extremely effective way of protecting our eyes from UV rays is by wearing sunglasses. Sunglasses can filter out or even block harmful UV rays from penetrating the eyes and the surrounding skin. This reduces the likelihood of developing sun related eye conditions such as early cataract formation and macular degeneration. At the Eye Health Clinic we offer sunglasses which can incorporate your prescription and transition lenses in a variety of coloured tints. Be wary of cheap sunglasses sold by companies as they are most likely for accessory purposes therefore not going to provide adequate UV protection.

Finally, a wide brim hat for extra precaution will provide protection to your eyes and face, especially on those extra sunny days!
